More on Robert J. Ott—Master of the Year
I would have never thought that on October 6, 2009 which is the 19th year since I have become blind I would be sitting in my office writing a mini biography of my life and the study of Korean Martial Arts that I have been doing for close to 30 years. I also would have never thought that an article that I read many years ago as a young man that was titled “Pil-Sung” that was in one of my subscriptions of Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine would have come to be my way of life, the title of my book written and the name of my business that provides the labor that feeds thousands of U.S. Army Soldiers each day. I have come to learn that our own self beings have a path that it will follow and during this journey we as people may understand it via a good guess or we may not. In either case it is just like our lives for it will only happen once and if we do it right then that once will surely be enough. I once again opened up Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine to read the dojang directory that was located towards the back of the magazine only to find in Exton, Pennsylvania a small little photo of Grandmaster Goh Chae Teok. To this day I know that no person is going to believe me but that little photo of him winked at me and said “Come train at my Dragon Gym Bobby!” I remember getting in my car with a map and my girl friend and driving off to go find Exton, Pennsylvania. It turned out to be over an hour drive in a part of the state that I had never journeyed in before. As I walked in and bowed to Grandmaster Goh who stood in front of me waring his black satin dobok with gold trim it became clear to me that this was my next place to study Korean Martial Arts. During my years of study under Grandmaster Goh at the Dragon Gym I began to blossom into what the fire within my soul was wanting. I learned not only did I have love for Korean Martial Arts but I was one who could teach and share positive energy to all walks of life. We had easily over 1500 students during my time at the Dragon Gym. While holding that position I developed a demonstration team and in one summer alone held over 50 demonstrations in the Chester/Dellaware County area. All during my years of time at the Dragon Gym I still competed in tournaments and attended seminars when ever time would allow it.
There is much to tell and share to others of the moments, days, weeks, months and years that followed but that will only be for the ones who pick up my other biography titled Certain Victory. This biography that is being read now has another purpose. I can also say that I found how to move on in life and become a man who still had that fire inside from the love my Mother taught me and the principles of Pil-Sung (Certain Victory) which are strength, courage and indomitable spirit. As a result of what happened to me I lost my right eye and had the nerves to the left eye severely damaged thus leaving me completely blind. In the most recent years that have passed I naturally did what true Martial Artists come to do through time and that is to give back to others. The numbers of stories that are ones of myself giving back to others are countless. Once I realized that what I give to others comes back to me in ways I would have never realized allowed for me to then become clear in what the power of care can be in our lives. These stories range from the giving of everything from money to love. It has been a story that many find hard to forget. For not only is it a story of one who helps others it is one of a person who lost everything in his life, climbed back to the top and demonstrated to others what Certain Victory through strength, courage and indomitable spirit is to a human. In July of 2008 I was honored to be on the cover of Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine which as discussed in this mini bio has been a large part of my life in the Martial Arts. My journey in life has touched the heart of thousands and I hope to touch thousands more for I know from my path that goodness always brings goodness. As I sit here and write this mini bio it becomes clear that I have finally learned to be able to see now what the fire inside is defining. Even when I use to be able to look through my eyes the vision was not yet comprehended but today as I sit in front of the computer screen a reflection of a Flowering Warrior projects off of the glass back to me with the same fire deep within the heart and sole………....
