Wife asks "How many black belts does a person need?"

The Milton Courier (Wisconsin) has a column by a woman who is the wife of a recently promoted fifth-degree black belt

.

She says,"In the past years, I have found myself competing not in but with tae kwon do. Tae kwon do wasn’t my thing. I didn’t get it. I didn’t see the attraction. I could have tried it, I suppose. It’s been suggested many times. I just could never picture myself wearing a white uniform and trying to kick people.. . .

It was great seeing my husband excel in his environment. I thought back to my comment: How many black belts does a person need? How many black belts did it take for me not only to acknowledge but embrace that my 6-foot, 2-inch Caucasian husband loves tae kwon do?

Many fitness-related activities take time and money. When we as spouses or family members or friends see that someone has found a sport or fitness program they love (even if it’s not the same as the one we love), we must encourage them. When they’re happier and healthier, we are, too.

I too thank the tae kwon do instructors and the people at the dojo, and I thank my husband for sticking with something (and someone) he loves for so long."
